What am I learning about myself as a learner and a person through this experience? Through the isearch experience as a learner I can manage my work and time well. For example I turned all of the subtopics and assignments in on time. Another example is that I went to homework club often because I knew I would have something due the next day or if something was due that day at 5:00 then I would go to homework club. This shows that I can manage my time well because if I didn't plan what I had to do then I might have not finished work on time, also because if I didn't go to homework club then I might not turn in my work on time. However, I also noticed that I can get distracted easily which is bad because then I don't have as much time to work on what I need to get done. For example, sometimes when I had a lot of work to do I would kind of procrastinate and then maybe start talking to my friends at homework club. To fix this I would usually move to another table so that I wouldn't get distracted. This shows that i get distracted easily because I would get off task and not do my work and might be talking with someone or checking my grades and stuff like that. In summary, I can plan my work and what I need to get done for homework or an assignment well, but I can get distracted easily.

What Is Something I Need Help With, Where Can I Get It? I think I mostly needed help with people to just read my work to check for small things that don't sound right, or typos, or find punctuation errors. For example usually I would ask for a peer or a teacher to read over my work to see if I had any errors in my work. Also, if I had any questions on how to cite something in my work or how to do a certain part of a works cited I would ask Ms. Nowakowski. This shows that I just needed help with little things in my research reports or subtopics because I asked a few people to help me reread my work. Another thing I needed help with was composing emails to people because I don't write many emails so I didn't want to sound rude or anything. For example I asked my mom (Mrs. Chan) how to write an email asking if someone could still do an interview or reminding them because they hadn't replied in a few days. This shows that I am not very experienced with emailing because I wasn't sure how to compose a certain email. To conclude, there were a few things that I needed help with like rereading my work for typos and composing emails.
How does this learning opportunity contribute to my academic development? The isearch has taught me different things like doing interviews, doing presentations, and making a website. Additionally, the isearch and visiting U.C. Berkeley has made me think about what I want to study in high school and college. I have done two interviews during the isearch but before I had only done one interview before on job shadowing. This is important because later in college or high school or even after that I will have to do interviews so the practice is good. Additionally, I have only done a few presentations before so I also have gotten more practice. Also, I have to present the presentation which I haven't done many times before either. Last, I have never made a site for something before so this is the first time I have done this. Finally, I am thinking about what I want to study in college or high school and now I am thinking of the area of climate change because it's interesting to me. All in all, I have learned different skills and have started thinking of my major.
What Strategy Have I Used In Learning This Topic? While learning this topic I have used a few different strategies. I have used planning, communication, and organization. I used planning for thinking about what I need to get done and when it needs to be done. This has been helpful because if I need to get things done then I know when to start it and when it needs to be done. I have used communication by asking my teachers questions and emailing them if I have a question about work that I'm working on. This has been helpful because sometimes something is confusing or I'm not sure how to do something then I can ask to make make sure my work was done correctly. Finally, I have used organization because to make sure I complete all my work, keep track of what I have to do, and just be organized I have to use organization. This was helpful because all of my work was organized and easy to find and I turned it all of my work on time which is good so I don't get graded down for being late. All in all, I have used organization, planning, and communication on the isearch.
Why is the isearch difficult for me? I believe the isearch has been difficult for me for a few reasons. The reasons are, it's a lot more research than I've ever had to do before, there is a lot more work in general, and during the last month there's been a lot of other things going on while we're working on isearch. The reason that the isearch is more research than I have done before is because I've only done about three research reports before and the isearch is like five research reports combined. For example each subtopic is five paragraphs long and for me the whole thing is four pages long including the works cited; and there's five subtopics. Additionally, there's even more work like two interviews, six learning logs, and a website. Finally, there's been a lot of work going on. For example job shadowing is happening and Raya didn't shadow with me so Kelly did and the situation is just kind of weird and complicated. Also every day I have at least an hour of after school clubs and sometimes two hours. Additionally, there's just the normal homework and stuff like that to do. To sum it all up, I think isearch is difficult because there's a lot of stuff going on and the isearch is challenging.
What am I enjoying about this process? I chose climate change for my isearch because it's a topic I am interested in. From the beginning I was excited about learning more about climate change. So far I have enjoyed learning how climate change affects animals, plants, and basically what affect it has on the whole planet. Also I have enjoyed learning about all the big and small things we can do to help stop climate change. Also because the isearch is the biggest research report I've ever done and we're in the last month of school so there is a lot of stuff going on I am learning how to stay on top of all my normal school work in Ms. Nowakowski's class and Ms. Waldo's class, the job shadowing, and isearch. Last but not least, I have enjoyed learning how to research a topic and also how to do a big research report. For example I have completed 14 reference sheets and all that research is going to make 5 different research reports To conclude, during the isearch I have enjoyed learning about climate change (how to stop it, what causes it, and what it affects), learning how to keep up with me school work, and how to do a research report.
What is my plan of action? My current plan of action for this week is to finish my reference sheets over the next few days because five are required. They are due next week (April 19th) and I have only done about one and a half and since I have a few extra to do because I have an extra sub-topic I will need a few days to work on them. Then, I am going to try to contact a worker from the San Francisco Scavengers (Lipman had an assembly to learn about landfills and learn how to recycle correctly and a field trip to see a landfill and how materials are recycled) to plan an interview or two people for my two required interviews, just to plan ahead so I don't run out of time. After that I am going to start working on my Introduction for my isearch because it's due April 25th, and is the next thing due after the reference sheets. All in all, for my isearch my goal is to make sure I give myself plenty of time so I'm not ending up trying to rush and finish something messily for the isearch the night before it's due. |
